چکیده

The parallelization of distinct element models is discussed with particular attention being paid to the problem of load balancing. One method for solving the load balancing problem through the use of a local, dynamic procedure is given and an implementation on the Cray-T3D and the Intel Paragon is described. The theoretical issues surrounding the load balancing problems are shown to map easily onto a cellular automaton which can be studied to yield better load balancing heuristics.

Numerical assessment of influence of confining stress on Kaiser effect using distinct element method

Nowadays acoustic emission (AE) testing based on the Kaiser Effect (KE) is increasingly used to estimate the in-situ stress in laboratories. In this work, this effect is assessed on cylindrical specimens in numerical simulations of the cyclic loadings including loading, unloading, and re-loading cycles using a 3D code called the particle flow code (PFC) based upon the distinct element method. T...

Discrete Element Modeling of Dynamic Compaction with Different Tamping Condition

Dynamic Compaction (DC) is a common deep compaction method that is usually used for densification of coarse-grained soils. Although traditional continuum-based models such as the Finite Element Method can be successfully applied for assessment of stress distributions or deformations induced by DC, they are typically not adequate for capturing the grain scale mechanisms of soil behavior under im...

A block-tridiagonal solver with two-level parallelization for finite element-spectral codes

Two-level parallelization is introduced to solve a massive block-tridiagonal matrix system. One-level is used for distributing blocks whose size is as large as the number of block rows due to the spectral basis, and the other level is used for parallelizing in the block row dimension. The purpose of the added parallelization dimension is to retard the saturation of the scaling due to communicat...

Numerical Modeling of Rock Slopes with a Potential of Block-Flexural Toppling Failure

One of the most important instabilities of rock slopes is toppling failure. Among the types of toppling failure, block-flexural failures are more common instability which occurs in nature. In this failure, some rock blocks break because of tensile stresses, and some overturn under their weights, and next to all of them topple together. Physical and theoretical modeling of this failure is studie...

Experiences of Parallelising Finite-element Problems in a Functional Style

Experiences are described of parallelizing a functional finite-element program (written in Haskell) for the solution of computational fluid-dynamics problems. A transformation prototyping approach using a system developed at the University of York, which simulates idealised parallel machines on a conventional sequential workstation, is presented. In this paper we demonstrate: (a) the relative s...
